HEALTHY SKINCARE FOR EVERY SKIN TYPE - A WHOLISTIC APPROACH TO GLOWING SKIN!

The skin is the largest organ on the body and plays a vital role in regulating internal body temperature while protecting your muscles, bones and internal organs from bacteria and disease. We all feel confident when our skin cooperates and is soft, glowing and radiant. At Flowers & Moondust, we use the power of African healing knowledge to promote healthy skin not perfect skin. What’s the difference? Perfect skin is unrealistic and is the finalized photoshopped images that appear on the cover of magazines. Healthy skin, on the other hand, is tangible and can become your reality when you take a holistic approach to wellness. We’ve taken the liberty to compose some healthy skincare tips that can help you find and maintain your glow!

Healthy skincare tips:

  1. Eat a well balanced diet. Did you know the skin renews itself approximately every 28 days? So why not give your body the best building blocks to renew your skin? Diet and skin health are closely related so it’s essential to support healthy skin regeneration by eating a well balanced plant-based diet filled with organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Foods containing omega 3s, antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E), and carotenoids are especially good for skin health. You can find these vital nutrients in foods like avocado, berries, carrots, spinach, raw cocoa and whole grains. Grown organically in Ghana, our African superfoods are high in nutrients and antioxidants, with our Baobab Fruit Powder containing 10x the amount of vitamin C as oranges! Eating plant based meals and incorporating African superfoods in your smoothies, juices, salads and baked goods are excellent ways to boost your skin glow from the inside out.

  2. Develop a simple skincare routine and use non-toxic skincare products. Your skin is permeable and absorbs substances applied to it. Thus, it is important to use safe, non-toxic skincare products to prevent absorption of potentially harmful chemicals. We recommend washing your face twice daily, one in the morning, and again in the evening. Our African Black Soap is helpful as it can be used for your face (great from night time make-up removal), body and even hair. It is naturally anti-bacterial and effectively removes dirt. After washing, while your skin is still slightly damp, follow up with a pea sized amount of our skin butter of your choice (Raw Shea Butter, Golden Shea Butter, or Cocoa Butter). Our skin butters uses age old African traditional recipes and are 100% natural, organic and non-toxic. Applying right after showering helps seal in moisture. Add your favorite SPF on top if it’s in the morning and that’s it! A simple skincare routine that’s effective and nontoxic.

  3. Stay hydrated. Drink water! Here is another reason to carry around a (reusable) water bottle. Drinking water is good for your overall health as it helps in digestion, circulation, absorption and excretion. Skin cells (like other cells in your body) are made up of water so If your skin is dehydrated, it will become dry, flaky and lackluster. Water also helps flush out toxins from the body and skin and helps carry nutrients to our cells to repair any damage. We recommend drinking at least two liters of water per day. Pro tip: flavor your water by adding lemon, lime, oranges, cucumbers or mint.

  4. Don’t skip SPF! Eating a balanced diet is for everyone. Drinking plenty of water is for everyone. And guess what? Wearing sunscreen is for everyone too! Wearing sunscreen and limiting time spent in harsh sunlight (especially between the times of 10am-4pm) will help in your endeavors to maintain healthy skin. It is important to apply sunscreen to your skin at least 30 minutes prior to going out into the sun (reapplying about every two hours). Using an SPF of at least 30 blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. As stated, sunscreen is for all complexions, even people with darker skin tones should use sunscreen.

Along with the above tips, not smoking, limiting alcohol consumption and managing your stress all promotes healthy skin. Remember, even if you follow all of the above, it is totally normal to experience a pimple here and there. Just make sure you are taking a 360 holistic approach to prioritizing your well-being (body, mind and soul) and your skin will glow!
